Wrought Alloy Designation Major Alloying Elements and Typical Alloy Characteristics

1XXX Series

Minimum 99% aluminum or higher purity.
Excellent corrosion resistance, high thermal and electrical conductivity, low mechanical properties and excellent workability characterize these compositions. Especially be used in the electrical and chemical fields.

2XXX Series

Copper is the principal alloying element in this group and often with magnesium as secondary addition.
High strength, good machinablity and heat treatable. Relatively, the alloys in this series do not have as good corrosion resistance as most other aluminum alloys, and under certain conditions they may be subject to inter-granular corrosion.

3XXX Series

Manganese is the major alloying element of alloys in this group. Good corrosion resistance, workability but with low to medium strength and poor machinablity. Non-heat-treatable.

4XXX Series

The major alloying element of this group is silicon. Aluminum-silicon alloys are used in welding wire and as brazing alloys where a lower melting point than that of the parent metal is required. Not available as extruded products.

5XXX Series

Magnesium is one of the most effective and widely used alloying elements for aluminum. High strength and non-heat-treatable. Alloys in this series possess good welding characteristics and good resistance to corrosion in marine atmosphere.

6XXX Series

Alloys in this group contain silicon and magnesium in approximate proportions. Most popular extrusion alloy class. Good formability, weld-ability, machinability, corrosion resistance, strength. Heat-treatable.

7XXX Series

Zinc in amounts of 1to 8 % is the major alloying element of this group. Very high strength and good machinability. Be used in air-frame structures and for highly stressed parts. Heat treatable.
